What's in a name?

I thought I would take a minute to tell you how Nolan got his name.

Girls... no problem! Shawn and I have two girls names picked out easily and love them. Boys... different story. So when we found out we were having a boy, the search began. All of sudden a lot of names I had liked before now seemed not so great after all. I pulled out the baby name book and began my search.

Shawn's family has an Irish heritage, which Shawn is very proud of. So I began to look at Irish names. When I came across Nolan, meaning brave and noble, I really liked the way it sounded. The more I said it to myself and my belly, the more it just seemed right. Shawn agreed, and so Nolan was named!

The middle name was much harder. I really wanted something that had meaning and a story to it. Shawn and I went back and forth, liking names the other didn't. We looked at Arabic names, since we moved to the UAE, but couldn't find one that fit. We looked at name meaning and cultures. We joked and played with so many names, it wasn't until about 36 weeks that it came to us.

Shawn's father is named John. Both of Shawn's grandfather's are named John. Shawn is a form of John and they all mean a gift from God/God is gracious. I really liked the idea of using a family name, but we didn't really like Nolan John and Shawn refused Nolan Shawn. Also, I wanted to include my family somehow. My mother is Italian, and so after looking at many variations of John we discovered the Italian form... Giovanni.

So Nolan Giovanni... a brave and noble Gift from God. Irish for Shawn's family, Italian for mine. Named after Shawn's family name ( a little bit of mine as well as my maiden name is Jones) and he truly is a miracle baby and Gift from God. God has been truly gracious!!

 Nolan Giovanni Casey

Here he is!!!

Introducing Nolan Giovanni Casey. Born Sunday: January 13, 2013 at 7:26 PM.

 Here is his story...

Last week I made a decision to go to work on Sunday. The previous week (week 39 of pregnancy) I was sure my little man was going to come, so when he didn’t I accepted the fact he would come in his own time. The house was clean and ready, and statistically most first time babies come late. So, Saturday night I got a few lessons ready (remember Sunday is a school day here), and tried to head to bed early for work the next day. Shawn decided to stay up to watch the Ravens football game, so he kissed me goodnight and I went to sleep. Unfortunately that didn't last long. A nerve was pinched in my leg and sleeping was nearly impossible. I spent most of the night trying to get comfortable and walking around in circles. Shawn's game went into overtime, and so he never came to bed.

Around 5 am, after tossing and turning, I got up to use the bathroom. I noticed I was bleeding slightly, and that made me nervous. I was having very slight cramps, but had been on and off for a few days so thought nothing of it. I walked down the hall to the living room, and just as I rounded the corner I heard Shawn shouting cheers. The Ravens won their playoff game! When he saw me, he thought he had woke me up from his excitement. I told him I wanted to go to the hospital to be checked and make sure everything was alright. We decided to bring the hospital bags, but really thought we would be back home in an hour or so.

We checked in and thankfully they took my policy number, because I still didn't have me new insurance card. The nurse and midwife checked me out and informed me I was 2cm dilated, the head was down and ready, and after hooking me up for a CGT I was informed I was having contractions. They told me the baby would come that day and booked me in. I think we were in shock!

I was booked into a very nice private room, where a hot bath was already drawn for me and I was given a birthing exercise ball. The contractions were still not bad, so I turned on the TV and ate a snack. I told Shawn to take a nap, and I walked around and used the birth ball. I soaked in the tub also. It wasn't until around 11-12 that the contractions really began to pick-up. By 2pm I was ready for an epidural, but was told I couldn't have it yet. I had to wait until I was 5 cm dilated. I have to admit, I was a baby. Shawn was so great and helpful, but I was begging for the meds. Finally they checked me at 5 and was told I was ready, and by 5:30-6:00 I was moved up to the birthing room.

Shawn napping

Let me say, all those women who give natural birth... you are amazing. That epidural was a miracle drug for me. I know everyone has their own story and experience, but for me it was the right choice. I could actually enjoy the experience, speak to Shawn and the nurses, and understand what was happening around me instead of crying and just wanting it to be over.

After the epidural things slowed down, and they eventually broke my water. After that, they said they would check my progress in an hour and see how things were going. An hour later the midwife came in to check and said “He's here, time to push!” I was shocked and said, “Now?” She said “YES!!!”

I won't explain everything, but he came and was beautiful and perfect! The midwife and nurses were fantastic and so helpful and kind. They listened to my wishes very well. We delayed the cord cutting, but Shawn did cut the cord when it was time. I got to hold my sweet baby skin to skin and bond. They weighed him and measured him and did a little wipe down, not a bath (I wanted to wait for that). Everything here is kilograms and centimeters. 3.046 KG (6 pounds 11 ounces) and 50 cm (19.7 inches long). We had to convert later. The midwife then informed me that although we both had tried to avoid it, I has a tear and had to be stitched up. I was grateful they didn't cut me though. Although I asked, I was not told how many stitches I had. All I know is it took over an hour. I didn't mind though as I held me sweet boy the whole time.

Just born

After waiting for some time, I was moved back to my room. As said before, it was a private room... very nice. All the nurses were fantastic and the food was good! They even had English channels, so I ended up semi-watching a lot of movies over and over again. I think Harry Potter came on three times haha. It was more just a background noise as Shawn and I dozed and I was stuck in bed.

The room

The first night was rough. As the epidural wore off I was in a lot of pain. Although Nolan slept well, I did not. We also had some problems with feeding. Nolan refused to wake up and eat. Actually, breastfeeding has been a challenge up until now, but we both have been persevering and he is getting much better. I know it is worth it. They eventually gave me some pain meds and I was able to sleep a little here and there the next day and night.

We spent the next two days bonding, cuddling, attempting to feed, etc... Shawn changed most of the diapers. He is an excellent father! He came home to make all the phone calls and post pictures, as well as pick up our new car to take Nolan home in. Then on Tuesday it was time to go home. Nolan had his vaccinations and screening and of course everything was perfect! I was visited by the doctor, dietitian, pediatrician, and lactation consultant. They gave me my prescriptions and we were on our way. I couldn't believe they were letting me take this tiny miracle home. I think I still am in shock that he is mine... but he is. So there it is. Nolan's beautiful birth story!

39 Weeks

Picture was taken: January 6
Major events: Winter break ending, purchasing a vehicle, doctor appointment
How far along: 39 weeks 1 day
Baby size: Watermelon (around 6.5 pounds at doctor appointment last week)
Weight gain/loss: Gained around 35 pounds... hmmmm!!!
Clothing: Pretty much the same maternity shirt all the time because it is comfortable, tank-tops, and nightgowns
Stretch marks:Think I'm going to make it through with none :)
Sleep: Up a million times to go to the restroom as well as getting pinched nerves in my legs depending on which side I lay on.
Best moment: Seeing ultrasound last week and spending time with Shawn over the break
Missing:My whole body!
Foods: No cravings... my stomach is tiny now. I get full so easily. Eating the "old wives tales" foods for labor!
Morning sickness: None... have had a few moments of feeling a bit ill. Think it is because of small stomach/foods/acid reflux.
Mood: I have been going through many different emotions. I really believed in my mind that this baby would come meet us in week 39, and when that wasn't happening I got frustrated. I baked a chocolate labor cake, ate pineapple, and all other kinds of stuff. Sitting around the house is hard, now that everything is ready. It is the waiting game... a game I am not very good at. I finally have come to terms though that this baby will come when he is ready, and stress won't help with that. I continue to eat the cake because it is so yummy and I continue to walk 3-4 miles a day because I want to stay healthy... and I am also going to go back to work on Sunday. I am healthy and active, and there is no point in me sitting around the house bored like I am sick. I mean... I can't be pregnant forever... right?
Looking forward to: Seeing my little man's face!

Nesting!

The nesting began at about 36-37 weeks in a different way then I expected... I became a sewing monster. Winter break began from school and I had more time on my hands than ever before. Shawn suggested sewing, as I used to do some back home, and so we found a used one online and purchased it. That was when the obsession began. I think I spent hours everyday for a week sewing. I made burp cloths, a wrap to carry baby, bibs, a swaddle, passy clips, and a car seat canopy. The biggest challenge was fabric. There are no real fabric stores like back home here. There are textile shops, but this is for making their clothing such as kandoras and other traditional dress. I know there are a few places in Dubai, but I didn't feel like making an hour trip to find fabric... so I got creative. I found some cheap sheets at the store, and projects were underway. The other challenge was thread. I bought some at one shop that was awful. It kept breaking in the sewing machine. After visiting a few different places, I finally found some that worked. Yet then... after about a week, I was “sewed” out. It was like I hit a wall. No more sewing. That was when the cleaning began!

My next phase of nesting was cleaning. This started around 38 weeks and went on (I still feel like I should be cleaning!) I went crazy... reorganizing every little nook and cranny in the house, scrubbing all the walls, disinfecting everything you could possibly touch. I washed all the baby things in special detergent, then washed anything else I could. I cleaned the sofas, pillows, rugs... you name it! This place is cleaner than when they first built it, but it is ready for baby! Shawn also helped me get other things ready. We moved the crib into the bedroom and hooked it up to the side of the bed for co-sleeping, as well as moved the glider in our room. We went shopping for our last little bit of things we needed such as a few more bottles and even got a free teddy from Toys-R-Us. Shawn also bought me a pretty new diaper bag that looks like a purse! Now the waiting has begun!

Fun in the desert!

Towards the beginning of December we decided it was time to document my growing belly as well as get some photos ready for Christmas cards. We were very lucky to have a good friend of ours agree to take the pictures, saving us some money and making me feel more comfortable having someone I knew with us.

The day of the pictures I got ready, spending time trying to straighten and fix my hair and ironing our previously chosen outfits. This turned out to be very humorous as the wind and sand made it pointless. We drove out to the dunes, which were beautiful. They had a great red hue to them and what I call “tiger stripes”.

Oh, I forgot to mention the irony of scheduling. The day we were originally going to do the photos was the first day it rained here in about 6 months. It was nice to see a real rain, but funny it happened that day! It worked out though, as the day we went had beautiful blue skies.

We did Christmas photos first and then belly pics. It was an adventure as the wind would whip over the dune and send sand into our faces. So much for fixing my hair :) I have to say our friend taking the pictures was such a trooper as she had to deal with the sand as well. We spent a lot of time laughing and had a good time with it.

An unedited photo to show the sand, wind, and flies!

The other funny thing was the Emirati's out dune-bashing. This is when they take their SUVs out and ride over the dunes. Remember, in their culture women cover from head to toe. So here I am in a little tank-top with my big belly hanging out as these huge SUVs are driving around. One even pulled up next to us waving and inviting us to go for a ride. Maybe another time!

So here are some of the finished pics!

Merry Christmas!!!
